Obama supporters in overdrive to get early votes

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — President Barack Obama's re-election hopes hinge on how well he turns out volunteers to get everyone they can to go to the polls.

The Obama campaign has an advantage over Republican Mitt Romney in the number of offices and paid staffers. But Romney is enjoying a surge in volunteers after his strong debate performance Wednesday.

That's why Obama's supporters are working to lock down as many early votes as they can.

National and state polls taken before the debate show Obama with a comfortable lead over Romney among those registered to vote. But those surveys also show he is in a tight race with the Republican among likely voters, a disparity that underscores the importance that turnout efforts will play in determining who wins the White House.
