Official apologizes to economic development board

MADISON (AP) — Gov. Scott Walker's top aide has apologized to the state's economic development agency's board for not telling members about a critical letter from the federal government.
    
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development said in an Aug. 12 letter the state Department of Administration and the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation failed to follow federal law and their own policies in issuing grants. The letter came to light in a Wisconsin State Journal story Wednesday, leaving WEDC board members frustrated about being left out of the loop.
    
DOA Secretary Mike Huebsch told board members Thursday he chose not to inform them because the agency and HUD are continually in discussions about WEDC, a new quasi-private corporation Walker formed after taking office. He says the decision was a mistake.
