Candidates get big-name endorsements

ASHWAUBENON — The primary for the recall elections is only eight days away.

Candidates continue crisscrossing the state campaigning.

This time they're being backed by some big-name supporters.

Tom Barrett and U.S. Senator Herb Kohl flew into Ashwaubenon Monday. Kohl says he's backing the Milwaukee mayor for governor in the recall election.

"I think he will bring people together in a way that would be good for Wisconsin,” said Kohl.

Barrett says the endorsement from the well-known senator will help him at the polls.

"Senator Kohl is revered and respected throughout this entire state and in many ways I think he's respected not only by Democrats but by independents and Republicans as well," said Barrett.

Barrett isn't the only Democrat receiving notable endorsements.

Kathleen Falk campaigned Monday in the Madison area. She's been endorsed by several major unions and labor groups.

Governor Scott Walker was in Shawano talking with a small manufacturing company.

Walker says he's anticipating big crowds for his campaign stop in the Green Bay area Tuesday. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie will appear with Governor Walker during a stop in Howard.

"He's been in office a year longer than I have. He started out with some tough approval ratings. His approval ratings have gone up as people have seen results from his tough decisions. They've seen they're positive for the state and I think long term you're going to see the same thing here,” said Walker.

Whether the endorsements of well-known political figures will bring results at the polls won't be seen until after the ballots are counted next week.

The recall primary for both parties will be held next Tuesday. The general gubernatorial recall election is Tuesday, June 5.
