Budget plan heats up as campaign issue

WASHINGTON (AP) — The debt-slashing budget plan by House Republicans is heating up as a presidential campaign issue, as its author Rep. Paul Ryan and a top White House adviser spar over its impact.

Senior White House adviser David Plouffe said Sunday that leading Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney would "rubber stamp" Ryan's budget plan. The GOP proposal — endorsed by Romney last week — would slice $5.3 billion from President Barack Obama's budget over the coming decade through tax reforms and sweeping program cuts.

Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, the plan's architect, brushed off Romney's linkage to the plan. Ryan said he will be the plan's main shepherd in Congress. Ryan added he was not actively seeking to become Romney's running mate.

The two men spoke on "Fox News Sunday."
