Gov. Walker talks about end of session

APPLETON — With the Senate adjourned and the Assembly poised to do so soon, Republican Governor Walker says this is a historic legislative session.

"I think overall if you look at this legislative session that started June 3rd of 2011, this is arguably one of the most aggressive pro jobs agendas in the country," said Walker.

Governor Walker says he's pleased with the jobs created this session, but says there is still more work to be done. State Senator Dave Hansen says, that's what Democrats have been saying all along.

"It's a good up-tick and I hope it's a sign of progress, we could have done a lot more as far as job creation," said State Senator Dave Hansen, D, Green Bay.

Talk of job creation dominated this legislative session. Hansen says in former Governor Jim Doyle's last year in office Wisconsin saw 33,000 new jobs.

Governor Walker says this year, more than 15,000 jobs have been created, and employers are becoming optimistic.

"Just two years ago only 10 percent of the employers in our state thought we were heading in the right direction, the same survey was conducted just about two months ago and 94 percent of our job creators believe we are headed in the right direction," said Walker.

But Democrats argue that Republicans would not work with them to create more jobs, on issues like mining.

"That's all we ever asked for is that we not have a single person or a group to dominate too much and that we all find a way to work together," said Hansen.

"The failure of that is the fact that 17 senators put politics ahead of jobs," said Walker.

But next year will bring a new session and a new look to the legislature.
